You dance to disco, and you don't like rock.
I started my new job today, sort of. I spent the morning cleaning up some ongoing issues from my old job, then I found out what some of my new duties will be. Basically, I'll be working with the team in India, which will be nice since I know them already. No longer will I have to talk to customers on a daily basis. I'll do a lot of call auditing, work on some process improvement projects, and may end up doing some more travelling. I really like my new manager, who was in India with me for about a month or so.
Victor and I went grocery shopping tonight. Usually we go to Randall's, because it's closer to our houses, less crowded, and we have the club cards. OK, I take that back... I usually go there, Victor goes to Central Market. But anyway, tonight we wanted more selection, because we hadn't shopped in so long, that we went to H.E.B. instead. Usually, I'm so annoyed with the crowds there, but I guess we were there late enough that it was ok. I got a new ivy plant for my desk at work, plus a bunch of food. I'm going to try to eat out way less, because I can save more money and eat healthier. Plus, I miss cooking.
In financial news, I paid off one of my credit cards today!!! I'm so glad, because I didn't care for the credit card company. As soon as the payment goes through, I'm calling to cancel. Also, it's pledge time at KEXP, which is my internet radio staple, so I pledged to them this week. John in the Morning thanked me on the air.
Oh!!! Speaking of John in the Morning, remember the guy I kept talking about at the ACL Festival? The Mod Rocker guy? Apparently he's a minor celebrity. His name is Beatle Bob, and he's from St. Louis. Want to know more? Check out this No Depression article, or just do a quick Google search, because this guy is all over. He's even been in a Guided by Voices video. Thanks Mark for the tip-off. Here's one of the pictures I took of him:

Another yes!!!
Ye Olde Computer is back from the dead. Only $30 spent at HP tech support for a 5 minute fix. Oh well. I did lose any emails I received last week. Charley, I know I owe you one back... but I'll have to send it to your home address. Hmm, I don't even know if you read my blog, so maybe you won't see this.
Oh well, I'm back!

Something for the weekend.
So. After the demise of my computer Thursday night (thank you, MBNA... thank you, Microsoft), I cleaned up the house for Diana's visit. She got in Friday morning. Victor, Diana, and I had lunch at Trudy's and then Diana and I went to my interview. I think it went well. I'm still waiting to hear back whether I got the job or not. We went shopping Friday afternoon, and I got a couple of things at the mall.
Friday night, we ate Chinese food and went to the Super Furry Animals/Grandaddy show. I took pictures, and hopefully I can download them onto Victor's computer so that I can post them. We were up close for all of SFA and about half of Grandaddy. SFA were very good, even though Gruff's hair makes him now look like a madman. They played several songs from the past two albums, and two older b-sides. I was disappointed that they didn't play longer, but it's the 4th time I've seen them, so I don't have that much to complain about. We decided that Jason from Grandaddy looks like my brother-in-law. Grandaddy weren't that exciting as a live show, but they played very well.
Saturday morning, Diana's sister came to get her to hang out with her family for the day. Victor and I went to get my hair cut (it's cute) and had Cuban food afterwards. We then had to take a nap, because it was such a lazy, beautiful day. We picked up Karen around 5 to go to Trudy's happy hour. Diana later met us at Victor's house, where a large assortment of my friends were gathered. We left around 11:30 to have a Dr. Mario tournament at my house. Diana ended up beating Victor and me several times, so I think she was the overall winner.
Diana left Sunday morning. We played soccer at noon, and I didn't make any glaring mistakes. Yay! My team won. Victor and I made salsa for Ryan and Kat's film benefit, then headed to Club DeVille to set up for it. The benefit went really well. Mark, Victor and I stayed by the free food most of the night, helping refill (and eat). I saw Aaron's and Kat's short films, which I hadn't seen before, and I saw Ryan's again (which I was script supervisor on). My old high school friend Mikey showed up with his girlfriend. I hadn't seen him in six or seven years, so it was nice to catch up. Victor and I won movie passes and a weekend getaway in the silent auction ("won" here means we bid $76 for those items).
So now you're caught up. I'm going to call tech support for my computer tonight, if I can find the number, and see if there's anything that can be done to fix it. If not, I may have to do some shopping.

Noooooooooooo!!!!!
If you're wondering what happened to me... my computer died Thursday night. I didn't have any time to work to get it resurrected this weekend, so please bear with me. I'll post more during lunch today so that you can hear about the weekend...

And the weather will hold...
I'm pretty well recovered from the festival. Tomorrow, my best friend Diana is coming down and we're going to see Grandaddy and Super Furry Animals. I'm so excited - it's going to be such a great show. They're double-headlining, apparently. Yay! I also have an appointment to get my hair did tomorrow. My stylist is named Missy, so that makes it even better. I'm going to get it cut a bit shorter, and add some chunky layers up the back. Yay new hair!
Too bad it's Texas again... by which I mean the cooler weather we've been experiencing over the past couple of weeks is gone, and it's hot again. At least it seems that way to me. That keeps me from fully enjoying myself. I need to live somewhere without such a brutal summer, I think. Come on Texas, it's officially autumn.
edit: I just found out that I have a second interview for a promotion at work. Yay! However, it's tomorrow. On my vacation day. When my friend is going to be here. During my hair appointment. There is no justice! I asked if they could reschedule, and they said no. I guess I'll reschedule Missy and drag Diana along to an interview.

Festival Pt. 3
It's all over now... and I'm so exhausted!
After breakfast at Nevie's, a bunch of us headed out to the last day of the ACL festival. It rained on and off all day, so it was muddy and a little miserable.
First up was the Shins, who were really good and who played some new songs. Their keyboard player is so funny. It's no wonder he's dating a model. The Mod Rocker Guy was in the wings again. Anyway, Victor and I got CD's signed by them after the show, and they were very nice in person. While waiting in line for the signing, I was able to catch some of Paul Thorn's show. I talked to him a little bit too. I'd met him a couple of years ago in Fayetteville.
We watched some of Lucinda Williams' set after that. There were so many people watching her. She played several songs I knew, which was great since I only have one of her albums. Then we went to see the Polyphonic Spree. Mod Rocker Guy introduced them, but he didn't say who he was. Man, the Polyphonic Spree are crazy. 23 people dancing around in white robes, playing scores of instruments and harmonizing to everything. I watched some crazy punk guy with a mohawk sing along to every one of their "ahhh ahhhs."
Yo La Tengo was next on the list. They played my song ("Tears Are In Your Eyes"), which I was very happy about. They also did some dance moves, which were pretty comical. They ended with a really stupid spoken/sung thing about nuclear war. Victor and I got some food and walked around for a while, then headed back up to the front for REM.
They were really good. They played a lot of old songs, including "World Leader Pretend," which I was very excited to hear. They also played "Find the River," which made me a little teary-eyed. Such a great song. Michael Stipe took his shirt off, and he didn't look as skin-and-bones as I expected. Some fratastic idiots in front of me were waving their arms during "Everybody Hurts," which irritated me, but still I thought the show was great.
So that was it. I'm exhausted. I'm going to try to get some pictures posted tonight so that you guys can see the rest of the weekend!

Festival Pt. 2
Your intrepid reporter is back with her second installment of highlights of the Austin City Limits Festival.
Today, we skipped the shuttle and parked at Austin High, close to Zilker Park. Less walking that way. Dan and Karen accompanied Victor, Mark, and me. We arrived just in time to see the Old 97's. Karen and Dan split off after that, and the rest of us headed over to the Dandy Warhols, where we met up with Nevie and one of Victor and Nevie's old friends. The Dandy Warhols were good, though their singer is a pretentious ass. We noticed this older guy in the wings that was dressed as an old mod Brit guy, with a scary bowl cut, doing this crazy dance. We couldn't figure out who he was, but Victor hypothesized that he was John in the Morning from KEXP, since he loves their new record.
After that, we went to hear Los Lobos, and Victor and I got some food. We then saw the Drive-By Truckers, and it started to rain. Mark, Victor, and I huddled under Mark's umbrella. Victor and I covered the rest of ourselves with pages from the New York Times that Victor had brought. The rain stopped after a while, and we headed over to see Patty Griffin (and got more food). I noticed that a crowd was already gathering for Bright Eyes, and I really wanted to see them, so we went over early. Victor and I went up front while everyone else stayed back so that they could sit.
I really enjoyed Bright Eyes. I didn't realize what a tiny elf Conor Oberst is. Beth Orton sang a few songs with him, and he was backed up by Britt Daniel from Spoon and M. Ward. Victor noticed Wayne Coyne from the Flaming Lips in the wings... and lo and behold, the crazy old mod rocker guy was there too! I saw him taking a picture with Wayne. Anyway, Bright Eyes only played a couple of songs that I knew, but I really enjoyed the show. It started pouring again, though.
We decided to leave after that, since we were all tired, and tomorrow is such a big day. None of us wanted to see the headliners tonight. As we were walking back to the car, who was walking down the street in the other direction but Wayne Coyne and his girlfriend (wife?). When they got close, I said "Hi Wayne!" and he lifted up his umbrella to us and said, "Hey guys!" I didn't want to be all annoying and ask for a picture, though I should have. Speaking of pictures... here's some of the highlights:

Sunset on the Festival

Day 2

Bright Eyes

Beth Orton with Conor Oberst

More tomorrow... it's bound to be good, since the Shins, Polyphonic Spree, Yo La Tengo, Lucinda Williams, and REM are playing!

Festival, pt 1
We went to the first day of the Austin City Limits Music Festival today. We saw David Garza, Liz Phair, Spoon, and Dwight Yoakum. We also passed by Steve Winwood, who has apparently crawled out of a hole somewhere. The Austin Shakespeare Festival was also performing The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged), which we saw as well. We had a really good time. I bought a cowboy hat to wear.
The parking situation sucks, though, because basically you park downtown and take a shuttle to the park. The line for the shuttles back to the parking was like a mile long tonight. We ended up walking for over 30 minutes until we finally found a cabbie willing to pick us up.
More festival news tomorrow... but here's the rest of the night's news:
Belle and Sebastian are touring!!!!!
Sun-Oct-26 Atlanta, GA Tabernacle
Mon-Oct-27 Durham, NC Carolina Theatre
Tue-Oct-28 Washington, DC 930 Club
Thu-Oct-30 Chicago, IL Congress Theatre
Sun-Nov-02 Austin, TX The Backyard
Tue-Nov-04 Lawrence, KS Liberty Hall
Wed-Nov-05 St. Louis, MO The Pageant
Thu-Nov-06 Columbus, OH Mershon Auditorium
Fri-Nov-07 Detroit, MI State Theatre
Sat-Nov-08 Toronto, ON Massey Hall
Mon-Nov-10 New York, NY Town Hall
Tue-Nov-11 New York, NY Town Hall
Wed-Nov-12 Northampton, MA Calvin Theatre
Thu-Nov-13 Boston, MA Orpheum Theatre

I was so excited to get this news in my inbox tonight. I've only seen them once before, at the Backyard last year, and it was one of the best shows I've ever been to. So many good shows coming up... next Friday, Super Furry Animals and Grandaddy, and then hopefully Gorky's Zygotic Mynci in Boston in October... B&S in November... how am I going to control myself??

Just can't get enough.
I can't control myself around the new Decemberists album. It's just so freaking good. Ryan loves it too.
Go get it. Now.

Too. Tired. To. Post.
Sorry I haven't updated in the last couple of days. This weekend was so draining, and I didn't feel good yesterday, that I haven't really felt up to posting.
Anyway, we went bowling Saturday night. Turns out, I had been bowling incorrectly all of my life. No wonder I wasn't ever any good. Anyway, I now know that which fingers to put into the holes in the ball (OK, OK, so I was stupid), so my game is already improving. I still suck for now, though. Ryan played a really great game, and Collier got a lot of strikes as well. Victor always does well, and Dylan is apparently as good at bowling as he is at soccer.
Sunday I woke up early and made muffins for the V, because I wanted to make him breakfast. I took them to his house and he, Gabi, her friend, and I ate them. Before I left my house, though, I finished up the cheesecake. The crust didn't stick together very well, but I made the top really pretty by arranging sliced strawberries on it. Victor's parents showed up not too long after we finished eating muffins, and we all went to have barbeque.
After lunch, we had the cheesecake. Everyone liked it. I was so pleased. I hadn't made a cheesecake in about 12-13 years (I used to make them for 4-H baking competitions), and I was afraid it wouldn't turn out well. After we stuffed ourselves, the girls and I (and that includes Victor's mom) went to the mall for a little while. I bought some jeans at the new Nordstrom and some cute t-strap heels at Foley's. We hurried home to change for soccer.
I played defense until the middle of the second half, when I went to play goalie. I'm not very good at that either, but I was trying my best (especially because the V's parents were there). Gabi kicked the ball into my face, which wasn't fun! I was diving to grab it, and it went straight into my glasses. They flew off of my face and into the trash can we were using as a goal post. I luckily didn't get a black eye, but it did hurt and scared me a lot. After soccer, we showered and went to Macaroni Grill.
So you can see perhaps why the weekend was so tiring. Monday morning, I got up early to have dinner with Victor's parents before work. I was so tired when I got to the office, and then... effing cramps. Being a girl sucks. I went home sick, because I couldn't take it anymore.
So that's pretty much brought you up to speed. Tonight - laundry! Gee, my life is exciting.

Woo pig sooie!
Normally, I couldn't care less about what the Razorbacks do in their games. I went to the University of Arkansas, I have a degree from there, but I never really followed our sports. I'm not big into sports in school, because I think it takes away from academics (not to mention it drains funding from the arts), but today, I had to be a Hog fan.
There used to be a huge rivalry between the University of Texas and the University of Arkansas. Back when we were in the same conference, most Arkansas fans would have given their front teeth to beat the Longhorns (please insert tooth1ess hi11bi11y joke here). But for the last several years, we've been in different conferences and only played each other during bowl games.
I live in Austin now, home of UT, and my boyfriend's getting his MBA there. So I halfheartedly support Texas if Victor's watching the game on TV. Today, the Longhorns and the Razorbacks played each other for the first time in years, and we went to the game.
Being a fan of the other team when you're sitting in the student section isn't that much fun. I would have liked to have cheered for Arkansas more, but I didn't want to lose a limb. Turns out there was a lot to cheer about, because we kicked Texas' ass. Arkansas played a good game, but Texas certainly did its part to lose the game. They had virtually no defense most of the game, and their quarterback sucked hardcore. But it was nice watching the little underdog Razorbacks beat the hell out of the mighty Longhorns. We ate hotdogs, got sunburned, and Victor's sprained ankle swelled up like a balloon. But we had a good time.
Now I'm home, I've got a cheesecake baking, and I'm about to do some cleaning. I'm listening to my new CD's which I got last night. They are...
Her Majesty the Decemberists by the Decemberists
The Decline of British Sea Power by British Sea Power
Songs for Dustmites by Steve Burns
So far, I like all three albums a lot. I also picked up a couple of cheap import singles and the Super Furry Animals Phantom Power DVD.
Last night, we saw Cabin Fever. Man, it was dumb.

I keep a close watch on this heart of mine.
I grew up listening to Johnny Cash. One of the first records I owned was a greatest hits album of his. He continued to be one of the things I had in common with my dad. As I grew up and developed my own identity, my dad and I had less in common. We went through a rough patch during my adolescence, as many fathers and daughters do. I know we both hurt each other's feelings. But we continued to share a love for Johnny Cash. I bought him several of Johnny's CD's for Christmas over the years.
Johnny Cash died today. This news has saddened so many people that I know. Johnny was a symbol for the downtrodden... his rise to fame showed us what a poor boy from Arkansas can attain. His early life in the country, picking cotton, mirrored my own father's life. And both of them were able to rise above their humble beginnings and make a life for themselves.
When June Carter Cash died earlier this year, I figured it wouldn't be long before Johnny would go too. I read somewhere that he was so devastated by her death that he thought of giving up. From what I understand, they had a deep, abiding love. I guess maybe once you've had that, you don't want to live without it.
Johnny Cash will be sorely missed. R.I.P.

Rings around the world.
This internet thing sure makes it easy to keep in touch with friends scattered all across the globe. This week I've received emails from two friends in other countries. We email back and forth rather sporadically, so I'm always happy and a little surprised to see an email from them pop into my inbox.
Interestingly enough, both friends were emailing me about a recent move. My friend Ellen, who went to high school with me but decamped to the lovely islands of New Zealand, has moved to Wellington from Auckland. She's working and doing a master's degree, which is tough in any country. Andrew, a close friend from back in my Ireland days, has finished college and just moved to Italy! I'm so excited for both of them. If I had unlimited funds, I'd visit.
One of the biggest reasons I started this site (and probably a big reason for most blogs) is to let my far-flung (and close by) pals know what I'm up to. I'm pretty bad at writing letters, even in today's age of instant gratification email. Some of my friends are just as bad as I am. I first contemplated starting a blog when I found my friend Kris's blog. We kind of lost touch when he moved to Chicago, and it has been fun reading about his adventures there. (By the way, where is he lately? Anyone?) I wish that more of my long-lost buddies had websites or blogs, so that I could keep up with them more easily.
That's also the reason I'm on Friendster and the money-grubbing, fairly useless Classmates. I've found a few people from college and high school that way. Of course, there's a whole 'nother dimension to Friendster... It can make you feel so good as you watch your number of friends grow... but you can experience a crushing blow to your self-esteem when you see someone from high school that has 78 more friends than you. And you always thought that you would come out on top. Ah well.
Oh, and speaking of far-flung friends... Today is Brad's birthday! Happy birthday, you crazy bastard you!!!

Nighttime would find me in Rosa's cantina
Last night Victor's sister Gabi and her friend got in from travelling in Mexico. They're staying with Victor/Ryan/Karen until they head back to Boston on Monday. We picked them up from the bus station, unloaded their stuff at the house, and went to The Draught House. My friends and I used to go there every Thursday night, but we've been slacking off lately. They have a great selection of beer, and you can sit outside in the parking lot and drink. Most people bring lawn chairs. I bought one of those folding camp chairs to use for that specific purpose. Anyway, we met up with some friends there, including one that I haven't seen since I've been home. It was a good time. My friend Meredith has been living and traveling in Mexico on and off for most of this year, and she was in town, so she chatted with Gabi and her friend about Mexico. Victor's uncle lives in Mexico City, and he's got a ranch house outside the city… that's where the girls had been staying. I'd like to go down there sometime. When I was in the west Texas town of El Paso, I went across the border to Juarez. But I'd like to see the real Mexico. Maybe someday we'll get a chance to go down there… I'd better learn some Spanish first, though.
P.S. Karen - I'm using my new handbag!

He's a rascal!
The UK's Mercury Music Prize has been awarded to Dizzee Rascal. Apparently, he's a teenager. Wow, I have done nothing with my life. Anyway, this news should make Mark and Victor happy.

Quote of the day
Victor: "I guess that makes me Jessica Simpson."
Victor: "I guess that makes me Jessica Simpson."
Good news! Plus, I'm tired.
Good things are around the corner here at Ordinary Addictions... This weekend Victor's parents will be visiting (I have been requested to make a dessert.. how housewifey of me), and his sister and her friend are coming in tomorrow. Then next weekend is the Austin City Limits Festival at Zilker Park. And then the next weekend, Diana is coming down for the Super Furry Animals/Grandaddy show. Yay!
The only downside of all of this madness is that I'm already tired as it is. I've been tired since returning from India. I'm sure it's still some sort of residual effect of the travel and jet lag. Every night I want to go to sleep at 8 or 9! I'm used to staying up until midnight at least.
By the way, does anyone else think of crazy Christian fundamentalist stuff when they see the phrase "Good News?"
Also, does anyone else ever get a phrase or name stuck in their head that keeps repeating itself over and over? I asked Victor yesterday if it happened to him, and he said no. The last two days, I've had "Nantlais Williams" repeating in my head. Apparently, he was a minister, poet, and hymn writer. No idea how he came to be dominating my thoughts. Weird. Wait, he didn't write "Hwiangerdd Mair" (as sung by Gorky's Zygotic Mynci) did he?
edit: I've looked all over google and yahoo, and I can't see anywhere that says he wrote that song. So where did I find him?

Update.
Hey everybody. Sorry for the lack of updates. I've been pretty busy... Here's what's been going on:
Friday, Victor and I scrambled to look for trucks to rent for our trip to IKEA on Saturday. We got nowhere. I began contemplating life without a couch again. We went grocery shopping and ate at Central Market. They have a really yummy restaurant there. I had a roast beef and brie sandwich with fresh fruit. After that, we just watched TV for a while.
Saturday morning, Victor was able to locate a pickup truck to rent. We were supposed to go to Fado to watch soccer, but we found out from Dylan that it cost $20 to get in. Nevermind! We just left for Houston instead, after picking up the truck. At IKEA, I got a new sofa and table, both in white. I wanted the sofa in red, but they didn't have that slipcover available. I didn't see a red table, but I would have probably preferred red if it had been there. I also got some other random stuff for my kitchen and bathroom. Victor got a desk and a super cool rug. Saturday night was spent putting all of our stuff together.
Sunday we returned the truck, got breakfast tacos, and then went over to Victor/Ryan/Karen's house for a barbeque. It was in honor of my and Collier's return to Texas. Lots of people showed up and made lots of yummy food. We played soccer afterwards, and I wanted to throw up. I'm not going to eat and drink at a barbeque and then go play in the hot sun again. I accidentally kicked the ball straight into Victor's crotch. Oops. Maybe I should get him a cup.
In work news, I finally got my phone fixed this morning. Yay.

Bored.
My phone is broken at work, and I'm waiting for someone to come fix it. I've now been waiting five hours. I did some work (just expense reporting) earlier, but I'm out of things to do. My job requires use of the phone, so I don't know what to do except wait. I'm surprised that my manager hasn't come up with something for me to do, but maybe she's not reading the update emails I send out.
Last night we played soccer. My friends play every Sunday, and while I was away they started playing Wednesday nights too. I haven't played in about three months, so I was pretty rusty. I'm pretty bad normally, because I've never really played sports before. I'm also fairly out-of-shape. Anyway, there weren't many of us last night, and everyone was determined that I would score, since I've never scored before (I usually just play defense). Finally, Victor set up a shot for me, and I made it. Yay! However, the other team's goalie, Chadwick, was actually gone from his position, because Ryan had fallen down, and Chadwick wanted to check to make sure he was OK. We were playing with virtually no rules (no offsides, time outs, out-of-bounds, etc.), as this was more of a practice match... and I think everyone thought that play had stopped. So I don't think I officially scored. But oh well.
I just sent another update about my phone to my supervisor, and he said "ok thanks." So I guess it's OK with them that I'm sitting here doing nothing.
One more thing - Welcome back to Texas, Collier! I'm looking forward to seeing you soon.

Some pictures!
I downloaded from my digital camera last night. Here's a few pictures for ya. I'll get the rest posted soon... I'm going to go to Victor's to use his wireless internet. Dial-up sucks.
Here's me with my new saree on.

This woman was begging, so I gave her money to take her picture.

Meet my friend the water buffalo.

So those are just a teaser for the slew of pictures to come. Like I said, I'll get them posted when I can wrangle Victor's laptop away from him. I wish I had a cool new house with a wireless cable modem... all three of the people living in the house have laptops with wireless cards, so they can just walk around the house all day looking at porn or whatever. *sigh*

Back home.
I have made it home.
The flights from India were ok, nothing to write home about. I slept a lot, and I watched a couple of bad movies. I got home Thursday night. It was so nice to see Victor at the airport. I ate dinner with him and Ryan, and then I went over to their new house. I saw some of my other friends there too.
Friday morning Victor and I drove to my parents' house, which is about a 9 hour drive. We hung out with my family over the weekend. Saturday, we went shopping with my mom and sister, and Victor and I also shot some clay pigeons (shot at, rather, since neither of us know what we're doing) with my dad and brother-in-law. Victor made guacamole and mojitos for my family, which they loved.
Sunday we all went out on the lake. My best friend Diana came too. My parents have an old ski boat that is always a challenge to start... we usually have to spray ether on the engine. But it did pretty good this time. We went swimming and ate fried chicken. We had homemade ice cream when we came home that night. Victor and I picked up my cat from my sister's house yesterday and drove home.
In other news, Ryan's film Black-Eyed, which was recently in the Austin Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, has been reviewed in Film Threat. They gave it a really good review. I'm so excited for him!
I'm still unpacking and stuff, but I'll get some pictures from my trip posted soon.
