Scary.
My costume is so big that I can barely fit in my chair at work, much less drive.

Yes, that's just a teaser. You guys aren't going to find out what the costume is until tonight (at the party) or my next update.

I'm easy... easy like Sunday morning.
I took it kinda easy this weekend, after the whole ER thing. Saturday I spent on the phone, mostly, and doing laundry. I did treat the V to pancakes at Magnolia for being such a hero Friday night. Victor, Ryan, and I played Scrabble on Saturday night and then we watched Jackass: The Movie with Karen and Dan. I had never seen it. I thought it was hilarious. Ryan and I discussed Johnny Knoxville's hotness in some depth.

Sunday was punkin' carvin' time. Everyone went to Victor/Ryan/Karen's house to carve pumpkins. I carved two... one abstract and one jack o'lantern. I took pictures, and I'll try to post them tonight. It was cold and rainy, so we didn't go to soccer. Instead, Victor and I had burgers with Aaron and Debbie, and then went to Best Buy to get blank CD's and stuff. It was Victor and my year-and-a-half anniversary, so we celebrated by getting yummy stuff from Central Market and watching a movie at my house. We watched (secret movie title here) because we're going as characters from it for Halloween. We're trying to keep the costumes as a surprise. We'll see if that works.

The only other excitement was that I caught my cat peeing on the armchair (thank God for slipcovers), so I was able to mete out some punishment. Usually he does it when I'm gone or at night, so I have no way to let him know that it's wrong. I'm not sure how I'm going to fix this problem. I need a bigger place with more room for him, so that he doesn't get all upset. I'm also gone too much. I know he's doing it out of spite, because he's never had any accidents before. I'm also going to have to change kitty litters again, because this one just isn't cutting the mustard.

Rockin' the ER
Last night I went to a housewarming/Buffy-the-musical-watching party at my friend Debbie's house. I'm not a Buffy fan - in fact I'd never seen a full episode - but I did enjoy the musical. We ate, drank, and were merry. Some of us decided to go back to Victor's to watch Starship Troopers, which I also had never seen. About 20 minutes into it, I started not feeling well, so I went to Victor's bedroom to lie down.

Along comes Mr. Asthma Attack. I have very mild asthma, mostly stress-induced. I went for years without any big attacks, but this year they're back. I don't have an inhaler anymore, so I had bought some Primatene tablets. Victor got them for me, and they didn't help. About an hour and a half later, my friend Aaron volunteered up his inhaler. It didn't help much at all, and within about 30 minutes, the attack was back. This bad boy was constricting my lungs with a vengeance. It hurt so bad. I started worrying about it, and that just made it worse. Then my stomach started hurting. So I started worrying about that too. I can be a bit of a fatalist or whatever.

So around 4am, Victor took me to the emergency room. Now, this was Friday night, and there was no room at the inn. I got put on the fast track because I was having difficulty breathing, but still I waited about 30 minutes for them to call my name. I finally rang the nurse again and told her it was getting worse, which it was. They got me to a room. About 30 minutes later, as the attack was subsiding, the doctor finally came to see me. He ordered a breathing therapy treatment which would help deconstrict (unconstrict?) my lungs and some steriods. About 20 minutes after he left, the breathing treatment lady came. The treatment, which consisted of me breathing in this really foul-tasting vapor from a tube. After she left, 15 minutes elapsed until a guy brought me some steroids to take. After that, I was kind of just left in the room. So I got up and went to the desk, and I asked if I still needed to be there. They said "Yes," in a really patronizing tone. Shortly thereafter, the doctor came to check me out. He said I could go home. It took about 5-10 minutes to get my paperwork done, and then I could finally leave. Poor Victor had waited the whole time in the freezing waiting room with nothing but a shirt.

So now I've slept about 3 1/2 hours. The medicine in the breathing treatment made me jumpy, so I'm awake again. Uggh. I think I'll try to lay down again.

Hey, at least I can breathe!

Beaten down by The Man
My workplace has always had a pretty hefty firewall... for example, I could never go to Nerve, or any Geocities sites, or check my home email (or any other common email sites: Hotmail, Yahoo, AOL, etc.). Recently, they did away with any outside messenger services, like AIM or MSN Messenger, and only allow an intranet messenger to use with other people at work. Often, my friends' emails don't get to me because they have been screened and discarded.

But new developments have taken the cake. I can no longer visit Friendster. It was catagorized as "Dating" and therefore firewalled. I can no longer visit KEXP, which was categorized as "MP3 Sites." What?! Hello?! Since when? It's just a college radio station! I doubt that anyone here but me uses it, and I've never downloaded anything from it. No more John in the Morning for me. I'm so sad.

Not to mention that, because of some sort of OSHA program we're volunteering for, I can no longer have a radio/CD player on my desk, even though corporate policy states that we can have a small radio on our desk! I was told to use my system's CD player instead, but I use my computer to listen to calls and audit them, so I can't have radio/CD player and the call program on at the same time. Plus, they just axed my radio station.

As Ryan put it, "Dude, what the hell is wrong with the place you work?"

I wish I knew.

Why can't it be 50 degrees in Texas?
I'm back, and I think I may have finished with the exhaustion...

I had a really great trip to Boston. It started with the Red Sox losing the stupid game on Thursday night. Afterward, I finished packing. Victor and I tried to snatch a few winks before leaving, but we couldn't sleep. So we left Austin around 1:30am and drove to Dallas. That part of the trip really sucked. We made it to the airport with only minutes to spare.

We got to Boston around noon. Victor's sister Gabi picked us up. We wandered around town while she was at work. We ate lunch in the Italian section of town... very yummy pasta. Victor showed me some of the touristy stuff, like the Paul Revere statue and the old meeting house. We did some shopping too. I have a newfound love of H&M. Boy oh boy, did I spend some money there. Later that night, the three of us went to eat a very nice meal in Jamaica Plain, where Gabi lives. Afterwards, we played a game with her roommates and their friends.

Saturday we woke late (surprise, surprise) and went shopping again. I met Victor's old friend at Neiman Marcus, and he resisted buying a really fabulous Miu Miu coat. We ate dinner at Radius, which was amazing. And expensive. But amazing. We got back to Gabi's around 1:30am, and there was a full-flown dance party going on in her living room. DJ's and everything. We danced for a bit and then Victor and I passed out.

Sunday. Woke late. Imagine that. We drove to Cambridge to have breakfast (at 4pm) and do some shopping. Always the shopping. We had dinner that night at Matt Murphy's in Brookline, which was a tiny Irish pub. It was effing cold, so I had some beef stew that was delicious. They pour a fantastic pint of Guinness there.

Monday, Victor and I shopped for a bit on Newbury Street, and I got some new KangaROOS. Hooray, new tennis shoes. I also got a cute Puma bag. We then headed over to Cambridge, and he showed me around MIT. He took me to some of the labs he used to spend hours in. Sometimes I forget what a nerd he is! We went to look at Harvard next and stared at the snooty bluebloods. Here's a picture of me there:

Mandy in Cambridge

We continued shopping around a bit, then went to eat a snack at the Middle East, which is a restaurant/club. We had tickets to see Gorky's Zygotic Mynci there later that night. We actually saw their singer, Euros Childs, walking around the restaurant. We went home and dressed for the show. Gabi had made plans to have dinner with her friend Brian, and we went along. We had some good, cheap sushi, and then headed back to the Middle East for the show. There weren't too many people in the audience. I saw Euros Childs standing near the back during the opening act, so I went over to meet him. I said some stupid stuff as usual, and he probably thought I was a raving lunatic/stalker, but that's ok. They were really good. Oh look, here's a picture:

Euros Childs

Tuesday, Victor took me to his old neighborhood in the South End. We had some very good coffee and croissants, then we walked over to his old house. I loved the neighborhood. We had lunch with my friend Nate. We went to college together. He's working in Boston as a lawyer. It was nice catching up with him, since I've kinda lost touch with a lot of my college pals. He took us to a nice (and cheap!) bar for burgers. Victor and I finished up our touristy stuff. We walked around some of the old burying grounds downtown. Here's Victor in the midst of some famous dead people:

We did some more shopping with Gabi when she got off work. We had yummy Indian food for dinner. In the Indian-American newspaper at the restaurant, there was a picture of Sunil Shetty, a Bollywood actor that I met when I was in India. I thought that was funny. Later that night, we picked up Gabi's friend and went to Radius for drinks and dessert. They brought Victor and I some lovely desserts for our 1 1/2 year anniversary. Victor and Gabi are friends with some of the staff there, so we continued drinking with them at another bar after they got off work. Then we headed home, finished packing, and left for the airport at around 4am. Yeah. That part of the trip sucked too. We slept pretty much the whole way home, except the driving home from Dallas part (well, I slept a little bit of that). I then proceeded to sleep about 14 hours.

The trip was great. I spent too much money, but got some great deals on clothes and CD's (hello, Newbury Comics!!). I was exhausted by the end of it, but it was so much fun.

Today, I went back to work for a couple of hours, and then my entire department went to plant trees in a park. Photo ops galore. Backbreaking work, though, as these were not little trees. I had dinner tonight with V, Mark, and Ryan, and we caught up on all of the gossip.

And now you're caught up too.

Vacation, all I ever wanted.
Yay, I'm going to Boston! Victor and I have been planning a trip to Boston for some time, but it looked like we weren't going to be able to go. Suddenly his schedule changed, so we found some last minute tickets on Hotwire. We're leaving tomorrow (our flight is at 6am from Dallas, so we're leaving Austin around 1:30am and driving up there). I'm about halfway packed. I would have liked a little more notice, because I need to get some winter stuff dry-cleaned, but I guess now it'll be Dryel and hope for the best!

Victor lived in Boston for eight years, and his sister still lives up there. He really misses it. I've never been up there. We're hoping to still see some leaves changing. The autumn leaves were absolutely amazing in Arkansas, where I'm from, but Texas doesn't really get that. So I am excited to see it again. We're also going to see Gorky's Zygotic Mynci while we're up there. Which reminds me, I need to get tickets to that. Anyway, I'm really excited. It's going to be at least 20-30 degrees cooler up there than it is in Texas. I love cold weather, and I've missed it since I've moved to Texas.

This trip coincides nicely with the recent success of the Red Sox. Too bad about the Cubs last night. I was pulling for a Cubs-Red Sox World Series. Sorry Kris, Jeremy, Kelly, and all the rest of you Chicago fans.

The new Travis album came out Tuesday, and I still don't have it yet. Man, I'm a slacker.

Oh, one other thing. My spawn of Satan cat, Liam, woke me up this morning around 3:45. I couldn't sleep after that, I guess due to excitement about the trip and my stupid back, which is giving me problems again. Thanks, Liam. I really appreciate it. Anyway, I was able to watch some morning news, cook a nice breakfast, color my hair, pack for my trip, handwash some clothes, put pore strips on my face, and pluck my eyebrows. So I guess the morning wasn't all lost.

Excuses, excuses.
Wow, I've been really terrible about updating. I guess I've been busy/lazy.

Saw Kill Bill Friday night. I liked it. I thought it was quite funny, and the fight scenes were very well choreographed. Of course, it was completely over the top. I really wish Miramax hadn't gotten all greedy and released it as two separate films.

Saturday Victor and I went to get plants at a local greenhouse. They have huge sales on some Saturdays. We got a big bunch of mums and three hanging purslane plants, all for $10. Afterwards, we went to the farmer's market and got yummy stuff. We tried to watch a soccer match at Richard's aunt's house, but we couldn't find the match on the satellite. We ran around for a bit then went to Debbie and Aaron's to for a football/birthday/Mario Party gathering. UT lost, the Red Sox lost, and I lost at Mario Party. But we had fun. We went to another party at Buckner and Tommy's that night.

Sunday I made omelettes from the farmer's market goods. I skipped soccer because I wasn't feeling so well. The Red Sox game was rained out, so Victor and I just made burritos and watched the South Park movie instead. I hadn't seen it before.

The Red Sox won yesterday, so Victor was very happy. I've seen more baseball in the last two weeks than I've seen in my entire life.

I'm not dead.
I promise. Here's a recap of the week so far:
Monday night I fixed dinner for the V, and we watched the Red Sox beat the A's. Tuesday night we hung out with his friend Enrique, and then Mark, Victor, and I went to Waterloo to buy recores. I got the new Belle and Sebastian and the new Death Cab for Cutie. I like both of them. I was feeling a little icky yesterday, so I stayed home from work. I tackled the humongous pile of dishes in my sink. Lately, my sink has been clogging up a bit... actually, let me preface that. The sink has always given me trouble, but a few months ago, the landlord had it "fixed." So anyway, it's giving me trouble again. I eventually had to get out the plunger. Now, Mark thinks that it is disgusting that I would use the toilet plunger in my kitchen sink, but I assure you that it had been disinfected. Besides, I washed the sink before putting the dishes back in. Last night, I went over to Victor's and watched most of the Red Sox vs. Yankees game. They won.

It looks like a busy weekend is coming up. I have a couple of parties to go to on Saturday. I'm sure that Victor will coerce me into watching more baseball. When do I get to have a nice, relaxing weekend? Oh yeah, I just had one. I think that's probably the last one for a while.

On another note:

Victor says I'm going to live a long time, but not as long as I could. You be the judge.

edit The link appears to not work now. Basically, it was a mock CNN article about how goin' down decreases the risk of breast cancer.

Shaun Ryder Day
As in, happy Monday. Man, I'm so tired that I might start looking like Shaun Ryder. I had some crazy dreams and nightmares last night... the coolest one was where I had the key to Kurt Cobain's house, which was located in San Francisco, which was covered in snow. I rifled through his medicine cabinet, but he didn't have any allergy medication.

What did I do this weekend? Watched a bunch o' sports. Friday night was pretty uneventful. Saturday morning, Victor, Dylan, and I watched Liverpool vs. Arsenal... Arsenal won. Dylan was upset that by wearing his new Liverpool kit, he did not guarantee them a victory. Later that day, Victor conned me into watching the Boston Red Sox, who surprisingly beat the A's. We had to watch them again on Sunday, and they surprisingly beat them again. The final game is tonight, and I think I'm going to have to watch that too. Victor says it helps calm his nerves if I'm around.

We played soccer yesterday afternoon, and my team won. Again. Yay!

In other news, Damien Rice won the Shortlist Award. I own that CD, but never really gave it a chance... maybe I'll have to revisit it.

Give us this day our daily cookie.
My parents don't go to church regularly. It's not that they don't believe in God or Jesus, because they do. My dad has issues with organized religion/churches. So I was not one of those kids who was dressed up and forced to go to church every Sunday. Believe it or not, when I did start going to church on Sundays, it was of my own volition. (I don't go anymore, but that's another story).

However, my sister and I did attend Vacation Bible School every summer while in elementary school. We went to a tiny Freewill Baptist church in the country. The program was run by two ancient ladies, Miss Jewel and Miss Carol. We learned Bible stories, memorized verses, and then did arts and crafts. You know, the macaroni pictures and stuff. I actually really enjoyed going. Summers were often very lonely for me, since I lived 20 miles from all of my friends. Bible school was a chance for me to interact with other kids. I also liked singing hymns, and I've always been a sucker for making stuff. Plus, I had a little Bible school boyfriend.

So why am I mentioning all of this now? Well, the cafeteria at work has these peanut butter cookies that taste exactly like the ones they gave us during our Bible school breaks. We would go outside (the church was set almost into the woods), eat cookies, and drink really cold water. They always had milk jugs full of the coldest, crispest water possible. It was probably just spring water. Anyway, every time I get the cookies from the cafeteria, I always feel like having a glass of cold water. I miss those simpler days, when summer meant Bible school, cookies, and cool, cool water.

Rocktober!
It's that time of year again. The time when the leaves change (well, if you live somewhere other than Texas!), sweaters are taken out of storage, and you can finally stop using the air-conditioning so much. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it's October. It's autumn. It's lovely!

This is really one of my favorite times of year. I think my Official Favorite Season may still be spring, because everything is so green, new, and reborn... but I really do love autumn too. I was able to leave my windows open last night while I slept. I'm crocheting a new scarf (actually, it's for the Belle and Sebastian concert we have tickets to in November). Liam has enjoyed playing with it while I'm not looking, which is really annoying and messy.

It's also getting close to Top Ten time. Top Ten Records of the Year, that is. I'm going to roll out a feature soon that will get everyone ready for it. I've been formulating my list, but I have a lot of work left to do.
