And in an instant, it's a little bit better!
Congratulations to David and Rob, who just got hitched! Reading the other half of the wedding description made me just a bit teary-eyed.

Depressing. Very.
So, the job hunt is just not going very well. I just keep sending out resumes, and I just keep getting no responses. Why am I so unemployable? I have a college degree, lots of skills, and plenty of experience. I don't want to have to go back to answering phones in a call center, but I'm afraid that's what it's going to come down to. I guess if I don't start hearing back from any of the companies in the next few weeks, I'll head over to a temp agency. I need to start making some money.

I could really use some cheering up (or a job). Maybe this weekend's planned trip to Boston will perk me up... but it might work in the exact opposite.

Oh, are any of you techie/web gurus? I need to break free from my old ISP, Texas.Net, in a really bad way. I'm looking for a site host and a place to buy a domain name. Any ideas?

I promise tomorrow I'll be back to semi-witty Mandy again.

Clear the area
Saturday night, I was feeling kinda tired, so I went to bed around midnight. Victor stayed up for a while and went to bed sometime around three. I barely rememeber waking up when he got into bed. It seemed just minutes later when the chaos began, although it was actually around 4:15am.

We woke to a woman's voice informing us that there had been an emergency reported in the building and that we needed to evacuate via the stairwells. We did not know that our building had an intercom alarm system. It was loud enough to catapault us out of bed. I threw on jeans and a bra, but kept on the huge Cure shirt I was sleeping in. Victor was sleeping in a Smiths shirt, and he threw on jeans too. I grabbed my purse and out we went. Nine stories down the un-air-conditioned stairs. We looked like a couple of hot, sweaty '80s refugees.

Surprisingly, the street outside our building was deserted. Two fire trucks pulled up, and three or four firemen went into the building. Eventually, people began trickling down. We saw people with their dogs and one woman who had a cat swaddled in a towel. There was also some kind of party on the roof deck that night, and the partygoers came down in their finery... some of them were dressed pretty tragically. We heard that it might have been a fire in the basement. Some of the partiers wondered if the fire was their fault. Anyway, the firemen came out after about fifteen minutes (they never even took the hose into the building), and we all went back to our apartments. When we got off the elevator at the 8th floor (as the front elevator does not go up to the ninth floor), the hallway was covered in a fine dust. Just one more mystery for the evening.

Other weekend highlights: seeing Hero, going to the Dallas Farmers Market, and our first trip to Eatzi's. Yummy!

Back in Big D
Hello, folks. We had a great time in Chicago. There was a lot of shopping done, including braving the teeming masses at H&M and making new friends at Barney's. We also saw some Blue Angels flying through the city as part of the Air and Water show. And yes, we caught up with a bunch of friends. We saw Kris in a play as a mostly-shirtless pirate. There was also a lovely Italian dinner with Kelly and Jeremy. Of course, there was a bar involved Saturday night... and our queasy stomachs were refreshed with brunch at Cafe 28 before heading back home.

I'm thinking we may want to spend this weekend doing Dallas things, like going to the farmers market and maybe seeing the new sculpture garden.

Oh, I need a job. Come on, Dallas employers, where are you?

Snot and the City
Sorry it's been a couple of days... I've been pretty sick with some sort of horrible head cold and/or sinus infection. It hasn't been pretty. In fact, it's been pretty horrifying. I'm starting to feel a little better, though.

Provided I don't have a major relapse this afternoon, Victor and I are going to fly to Chicago tonight. We're going to do some shopping and see my friend Kris in a play called The Pyrates. I'm also going to catch up with Kelly, Jeremy, and Jeremy. Hooray! Hopefully I won't give the Texas Illness to them.

Quiz Bowl
What is my recent obsession with stealing things from Neil? I guess he just has all of the coolest toys these days. I actually did this same thing about two years ago, but I have no idea where that quiz is, so here is a new quiz all about me. Pretty egocentric? I like to think so.

In other news, I saw the Curiosa festival this weekend. Highlights included the amazing Interpol, the fairground food, seeing my old friend George, hanging out with Billy and Diana, and of course, the Cure. This was my fourth time seeing them, and they always put on a great show. Unfortunately, there was an 11pm curfew at the venue, so they couldn't put on a three-hour show like they usually do. But it was still great.

Bye-bye, Craiggers
Did you guys hear that Craig Kilborn is quitting the talk-show business? I love him, and I'm a little sad to see there will be no more "Tuesdays with Morrissey" and "5 Questions." I was pretty sad, too, when he left The Daily Show, but I love Jon Stewart so much that I quickly recovered. Mark and Victor were reminiscing the other day about Craig's time on ESPN's SportsCenter, spurred by their "Old School" week these past few days. Apparently, they loved him then too. I don't know... I've only recently been initiated into the SportsCenter cult. Victor could watch it all...day...long.

Not much else going on here. Looking for jobs, watching the crap out of the
Gilmore Girls first season DVD, and finishing the apartment decorating. Tomorrow, Billy and Diana are coming so we can all go to the Curiosa festival. That should be a really good show.

Interview with the vamp...

This little meme has been going around for a while, and I finally decided to jump on the bandwagon right behind Neil, who has just interviewed me below. Here are the rules:

1. Leave a comment on my blog saying you want to be interviewed.
2. I will respond and ask you five questions.
3. You'll update your blog with my five questions, and your five answers.
4. You'll include this explanation.
5. You'll ask other people five questions when they want to be interviewed.

And here is my interview, which Neil has politely formatted around Bob Mould/Sugar/Husker Du song titles:

1) If you could make three 'Changes' to the world, what would they be?

Well, start off big, why dontcha? I'm not one of those "save the world" types, but I guess I could come up with some changes. Number one: everyone be happier. I think we are all too caught up with earning money, getting ahead, getting revenge, getting even, and whatnot that we forget to take time to be happy. Number two: everyone stop obsessing about how you look and just try to be healthy. No more beating yourself up for those extra pounds, and instead, just live a healthier lifestyle. This is a change I should make too. And three? No more religious fundamentalism. It's not good for anyone.

2) Complete the following in as many words as you fancy: 'In The Eyes Of My Friends', I am...

Well, probably to most of my friends I'm that nice, kinda funny girl that you don't really know too well. I sometimes kick myself that I didn't make closer relationships with some of my friends. I'm pretty good at making acquaintances, but I get self-conscious when I think about calling someone to hang out. To my three or four closer pals, I'm just crazy Mandy.

3) Write something entitled the following: 'Something I Learned Today' is...

Something I Learned Today: Today I learned how to get to Good Records from my new apartment, and I also learned that their prices aren't as high as I figured they were. OK, so it's not profound on the surface, but when you are a music lover, it's really important to know how to get to the local indie record shop.

4) What's 'The Biggest Lie' you've ever told?

Wow. Hmmm. I usually don't lie that much, beyond little white lies and the occasional "cough, cough" calling into work sick. The only sorta big lie I can think of is one that might still get me in trouble just in case certain people ever stumble upon this website, so I'd rather just keep that one in the closet, thank you very much. And it was a pretty stupid lie, so don't think it's about drugs or sex or rock 'n roll. Oh, I used to go to raves against my parents' wishes. Big deal.

5) Tell me, what is 'Your Favourite Thing'?

I have a lot of favourites! Including spelling things the British way... it's more colourful! I love hanging out with my friends... especially philosophizing with Mark, gossiping with Ryan, and making videos with Diana. And I love just being with Victor. I don't care if that makes me cheesy. Shut up, can't a girl be in love?

Back from the sticks!
I spent the last several days in Arkansas with my family. Not too much excitement there, just good ol' family stuff. Mom made a lot of my favorite food, including homemade ice cream, brownies, and yummy fried okra. We went shopping, and I bought my first real business suit on sale at Dillard's. Since I'm currently unemployed, I figure I'll have to go on some interviews soon. I was able to find a pretty cute (yet still business-y) brown tweedy suit, with cute buttons. I sent off my first application last week, so hopefully that will turn into an interview.

We have houseguests this weekend. Kat and Mark came up because Kat will be teaching a film class on Monday. They are taking a nap right now. I think we may go to see Open Water later tonight. Next weekend, Billy and Diana are coming down for the Curiosa festival. We're all going together. So we'll have houseguests two weeks in a row.

P.S. Neil, thanks for the questions... I'm working on the answers!

Going to the pictures
Sorry it's been so long. Victor and I had to go back to Austin for a couple of days, and we made a trip down to Houston as well. We're back just in time for him to start work and for me to take a trip back home to see the folks. So I don't have much time to get the Buenos Aires pictures posted to a pretty album. Until then, go to my Yahoo! photos and look at the Buenos Aires album.
