Sorry, folks
It's been a pretty slow week here. Just submitting more applications and resumes to jobs that will probably never contact me back. I've been reading a lot. I finished Friday Night Lights, which was really enjoyable. I was pretty anti-sports when I was in high school, so I can't imagine what it would be like to grow up in a Texas town where sports were the only thing going. I also read Tommy's Tale, which I found on sale at a bookstore. It's Alan Cumming's first novel, and it wasn't too bad... in an actor-first-novel sort of way. Right now I'm reading the highly praised An Evening of Long Goodbyes by Paul Murray. So far it's pretty amusing.
We got Interpol's Antics and Brian Wilson's Smile this week, but I haven't heard them yet.

A Sort of Homecoming
Victor and I are going to Austin tonight to spend the weekend there. It's been about two months since we've been there, and it will be good to see our friends. We really don't have anything planned except for a screening of two short films that our friend Aaron made. And brunch afterward.
Victor just finished reading "Friday Night Lights", and I am reading it now. We wanted to read it before the movie comes out. A friend of ours worked on the film, and the music was done by some other friends. I heard a rumour that much of the music recorded was not put in the film, but a paycheck's a paycheck, right?
Anyway, it's shaping up to be a very Texas weekend, what with the book about high school football, the visit to Austin, and Hurricane Ivan coming back for round 2.

Did everyone have a nice weekend? I did. Ryan and Joe came up to visit us. We had a lovely time. We spent the weekend running around and caught an exhibit at the Meadows Museum featuring Spanish and Mexican art. We also saw two movies, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, which no-one liked except for me, and The Brown Bunny which everyone liked but me. I thought Sky Captain had kind of a weak plot, but it was quite entertaining... whereas Brown Bunny was just plain narcissism. Oh well.
Speaking of Ryan, he's now a contributor to Lumino magazine. He will be writing a DVD column. His first review is found here.

Looking for something?
I haven't ever done one of these posts, although I see them on other people's blogs fairly often. Here are some of the recent searches that somehow lead people to my site:
Excuse me, what??? I'm sexy and interesting, but no thanks to meeting in Mumbai. I may be from Arkansas, but I don't have any tooth1ess hi11bi11y pictures lying around. My car hates me too, dude, so I can commiserate. And come on, people, when have I talked about rodent fetishes and porn??
It seems like most of the wacky ones come from India... there are all sorts of people looking for women with nothing under their sarees, hot naked Indian girls, etc. I wish I had saved some of the other good ones (my cheapo website statistics thingie cleans them out after a while). Sorry, Indian boys, there will be none of that here. There is a picture of me in a saree, but it's not very hot, and I'm not naked underneath, and I'm not underage...

Dancing like a beautiful dancewhore
Franz Ferdinand last night were great. I was pleasantly surprised, since I'm not a huge fan of their album. They are definitely better live. I had the same experience with Sleater-Kinney... didn't like them until I saw them. Anyway, the Gypsy Tea Room is a great venue... if you're close to the stage. We were not, and the stage is so low that it's hard to see if you're more than ten or fifteen feet back. I'm 5'6", which is not that short, so I can only imagine how frustrating it must have been for shorter people in the crowd. The crowd itself was really hard to figure out... not as many hipsters as I would have imagined. There were middle-aged people, frat boys, and plenty of people who seemed pretty clueless. That was strange, because the show was sold out in advance. I guess that's what being on MTV can do for you.
By the way, the picture here is the only semi-decent picture from the night. We are going to have to start taking Victor's camera to shows. It's heavier, but the flash is way better.

Living on the Edge
One of the perils of living with someone with OCD is that you're never sure if changes will freak them out. For example, I cleaned the kitchen and living room today as a surprise for Victor, who has been pretty stressed out lately. It always helps me to come home to a clean apartment when I'm feeling stressed, so hopefully my cleaning will help Victor. In doing so, I had to clean up all of our office stuff... mainly, bills. I tried to keep everything in the same piles (he likes to make little piles of things), but moved all of it over to the desk area. I'm a little worried that this may cause additional stress rather than alleviate it!
I also moved the remote controls from the coffee tables (we have two small ones) to the side table, which will probably work better for him, since he can reach them easier. However, Victor's pretty particular about his remote controls (must be at a right angle! must be in the same place!), so I may have screwed everything up there too.
At least the house looks much better, until you get into the bedroom, which I am saving for tomorrow.
Oh, we're going to see Franz Ferdinand tonight at the Gypsy Tea Room in Deep Ellum. I saw Clinic there a couple of years ago, and I was pretty impressed with the layout of the venue. It seemed to be a great place to see small shows. It will be interesting to see if tonight's show leaves the same impression on me

Well, I'm back from a weekend in the country. The trip was pretty uneventful, except for the football game, of course. Arkansas lost 22-20, but the game itself was pretty exciting. I hadn't been to the stadium since all of the renovations a couple of years ago, and I have to admit, it's fantastic. We sat in my parents' season ticket seats, which are on the 50 yard line but in the second to last row. I have approximated the seats on the photo below:
(the photo is from this site)
Apparently, there was also a bomb threat while we were there. Nice.
Anyway, I'm spending the day reading the newspapers and running errands. We bought the Sunday Dallas Morning News so that I can scour the job postings, so I'm going to do some of that as well.

Aieeee!!!
My friend Kat has started a blog! She's an amazing girl - very talented and driven. I wish I had half of her motivation. Anyway, she and two friends have started a new film company, called Storie Productions. And to go along with that, she has started a new blog. Here it is. Read it - she's so cute!
Also, Victor and I are heading back to my old stomping ground, Arkansas, for the University of Texas vs. University of Arkansas football game. We went to the same game back in September 2003 in Austin. For some reason, my permalinks are all screwed up, but you can read the post about it in the September 2003 archives... it's the post on 9/13. For a little more background on the game, read this article, which talks about last year and the long-standing rivalry between the Longhorns and the Razorbacks.
So, before we take off tonight, I have to do laundry and clean up the house a bit. How did I become so busy during my unemployment?

Music and Age
Well, we're back from Boston. We had a good time there. We did some shopping and some eating, which was to be expected. We also saw Maria Full of Grace, which I liked quite a lot. As for new music, we got the latest Rilo Kiley (still on my first listen, but sounds good), the Rogue Wave album (haven't heard yet), Scissor Sisters (so far, I like it), the new Libertines (haven't heard yet), and the new Bjork (like it). Could any of these be a contender for album of the year? Maybe.
In other music news, Franz Ferdinand won the Mercury Music Prize. Oh, and Victor, Diana, and I got tickets to Morrissey in Fort Worth today.
So what else is new? Over the past couple of months, I've been getting email about the upcoming ten-year reunion for my high school class. They have gone so far as to start a Yahoo! group for the class. I can't believe that it has been almost ten years. Next summer, I'll head off to see how much people have changed and/or stayed the same.
For the most part, I really enjoyed high school. I was in the weird, arty crowd... you know, the ones wearing fishnets and silver boots to school (remember, this was the mid-90's). We had crossdressing parties, went to raves, participated in every drama production, dyed our hair, all that stuff. Quite a lot of us were also honors students, including myself, which I think threw people for a loop. I don't think people understood how I could get straight A's and still be a complete drug fiend (which I wasn't - I have never taken drugs)... just goes to show you how people form these crazy misconceptions. Anyway, I managed to enjoy high school with only a few incidents of people being hateful and mean to me (especially compared to brutal junior high). I'm interested to see if the people who saw themselves as better than the rest of us still have that viewpoint. My guess is no. Most of the people I've seen since then have been nice and friendly, including the people who were not so nice back in the day.
I wonder how many people will be there that don't have kids and a spouse (or ex-spouse). So far it seems that most everyone is married with children. What is up with that? It took me quite a few years after high school to just get to know myself, experience things, travel, you know... how could I have done that with a family? I guess people's priorities are different, and mine just weren't the same as most people's. I really only keep in regular contact with two people from my class: Ryan and Ellen. Ellen has lived in New Zealand for years, traveled quite a lot, and is still single. Ryan is a filmmaker and is gay, so no marriage and kids for him yet either. So maybe we're the exception to the norm.
Still, aren't I too young to have a ten-year reunion???

More than a feeling
Alrighty, folks! I'm back and in a better mood, though still (terminally?) jobless. Today we are catching a plane to Boston to visit Victor's sister Gabi. She was recently in a pretty bad bike accident, so I don't think we're going to do any club-hopping or marathon-running. Victor's excited to see his friend who works at the Boston Neiman Marcus. I know we live in the home of Neiman Marcus, with the flagship store right across the street from me, but the selection for guys here just isn't as good as it is in Boston.
So there is a lot of political stuff going on these days. I have decided to not comment on most of it, probably because I'm just so weary of all of the crap that goes along with presidential elections. I also don't feel connected to either party... so it's hard for me to get fired up for their candidates. Especially these two... I can't stand Bush, and Kerry is pretty sickening. Am I going to have to write in a candidate? It's not like my vote really counts in Texas anyway, since Bush will win of course, but I have never missed an election, so I'm not starting now.
In other news, hooray for going to Newbury Comics this weekend! We haven't bought CD's in a long time, and we have a pretty long list for what to buy. I'll give you a recap once I know what we got.
